Regional Member News & Events 2019

Spring News:

Hello HSA Midwest,

Spring is just twenty days away! And with it, so many haiku activities.  Notice in the announcements below, a call for submissions to an Ohio Haiku Anthology and information on Haiku North America to be held not far from the Midwest in Winston-Salem, NC. You’ll find information here for planning your attendance and also a call for Program Proposals if you have a presentation you would like to share.

A number of our Midwest groups will host March meetings. My wish is for each of you to have a nearby haiku study group where you can share haiku and encourage each other along your haiku journeys. If you are looking for a study group, there are a number listed below.  If you don’t see anything in your area but would be interested in meeting with others to talk haiku, send your name and location to me at wartherjulie@gmail.com and I will try to put you in contact with others in your area. Sometimes haiku groups begin with two people sharing their poetry over a cup of coffee!

All the best,

Julie Warther

MIDWEST MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

From Joe McKeon: I am very pleased to announce the publication of my first book, oars up (Red Moon Press, 2019). I wish to thank Scott Mason, Francine Banwarth and Julie Warther for their invaluable advice in the editing of this book. I also wish to thank Jim Kacian and Red Moon Press for agreeing to publish it. I have limited number of copies that I can provide to anyone interested in having an inscribed copy. If you want one please contact me at joe17827@yahoo.com. The cost is $15 (plus mailing costs). ”Both of my oars are in the waters of Joe McKeon’s debut collection, a blend of haiku, haibun, and sequences unique in the way they navigate the span of his years from boyhood through manhood. Knowing that the mind is a time traveler, he set a driftnet to capture memories and events from the past, which is part and parcel of who we are in the here and now. These poems are heartfelt and delivered with an honesty that, to paraphrase the author’s own words, gives us a taste of life in each breath.” ~Francine Banwarth, Editor, Frogpond, 2012-2015

Congratulations to the 17 poets selected for inclusion in A New Resonance 11 including Midwest poets Joshua Gage, Brent Goodman, Tia Haynes, Elliot Nicely and Lew Watts. Books are available for purchase from each of the poets and on the Red Moon Press site.

MIDWEST STUDY GROUPS

Evergreen Haiku Study Group

Evergreen Haiku meets again at the Center for Poetry, Michigan State University on Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 1 to 3pm, Room C301, Snyder Hall at 362 Bogue Street in East Lansing.

Let’s hold a kukai at our next meeting, Saturday, March 16, 2019.  Anyone who has ever attended an Evergreen Haiku meeting is eligible, whether or not they can attend the next meeting and participate in the kukai “party.” What’s a kukai? If you’re not familiar with the term, it goes like this. Send me up to three (3) of your unpublished haiku by Wednesday, March 13th 2019. I will place them anonymously in a running list of poems and bring photocopies to the meeting. Folks who come to the meeting on March 16th will discuss the entries and cast votes for their favorites. Every haiku that gets at least one point is “born.” The top three vote-getters receive special admiration and, if the poets happen to be attending the meeting, they will get a prize as well. And, of course, everyone who participates will be notified of the results by email within a few days of the meeting (though I forgot last time). I hope you all consider participating. It’s a great way to get creative juices flowing. And a great way to get feedback on how others respond to your haiku. So mark your calendars!

Typical meetings include some mix of read-around, craft exercise, inspirational exploration, writing time, anonymous critique, and linked form collaborations. One additional monthly meeting will take place on April 13, 2019. Poets of all persuasions are welcome, whether novice or seasoned, student or community member. Note: Parking is free on Saturdays in campus lots (Faculty/Staff parking spots only). Some
parking is available in front of Snyder Hall. Otherwise drive behind Snyder and check out nearby surface lots.

The Haiku Chapter of the Illinois State Poetry Society is meeting next on April 14, 2019 from 1pm-4pm at the Northbrook Library, 1201 Cedar Lane, Northbrook, Illinois in the Youth Services Room. In addition to our critiquing we share resources and discuss published haiku from the perspective of those that delight and those that mystify. Contact Jim Sullivan at jsully1558@gmail.com for more information.

Haiku Waukesha (Wisconsin)

We meet next 5-7pm on March 20th. The meetings are held at First UMC Waukesha. Direct questions to: Dan Schwerin at dan.schwerin@fumcwaukesha.org. Thank you.

Ohaio-ku Study Group (Ohio)

The Ohaio-ku Study Group met Saturday, February 9 with the following in attendance: Sharon Ohnmeiss, Barbara Sabol, Larry Shircliff, Joe McKeon, Phyllis Lee, Barb Smith, Susan Mallernee, Valentina Ranaldi-Adams, Don Fulmer and Julie Warther.  We held a kukai with the theme of “heartbreak”. Joe McKeon won a book award. Joe McKeon gave a reading from his newly released book from Red Moon Press, “oars up”. We participated in a found haiku exercise using magazines from the library discard table. Everyone shared their found poems. We found it to be a useful exercise in jumpstarting the haiku mind and a fun resource for collecting unique words and fragments.  New issues of Frogpond, Bottle Rockets and Mayfly were passed around. The remaining time was spent workshopping poems.

The next meeting of the Ohaio-ku Study group is scheduled for Saturday, March 9 from 10am-noon at the Cuyahoga Falls Library. 2015 3rd Street, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The kukai theme is “spring” and the form is haibun (prose/haiku combination). Bring along haiku to workshop and some of your favorites from recent journals to share in a reading. All are welcome! For more information, contact: Julie Warther wartherjulie@gmail.com
