1. Frogpond does not accept poetry or prose that uses discriminatory language against any race, religion, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or ancestry. In addition, we do not accept submissions of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated writing.
2. Members and non-members of the Haiku Society of America are eligible to submit. By submitting, you acknowledge all work is original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere. We consider poems on the internet (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram blogs) to be previously published. Simultaneous submissions will not be accepted.
3. It is free to submit to Frogpond. However, we do not make complete issues freely available online. Only HSA members are guaranteed copies of Frogpond. If you would like to purchase an issue in which you appear, you can do so once they are published. Learn more about purchasing issues on the Previous Issues page of our website.
4. Submission Periods: There are three issues of Frogpond each year with month-long submission reading periods per issue—March for the spring/summer issue, July for the autumn issue, and November for the winter issue. Acceptances will be sent within 4-6 weeks after the submission period. All submissions received during our reading periods will receive a reply one way or the other. Haiku/senryu, rengay, linked-forms, and haibun submissions sent outside of our reading periods will not be read or considered for publication.
5. Submissions: Frogpond will accept a submission of up to eight (8) haiku & senryu via email during the following submission periods: March, July, and November.
In addition to your eight (8) haiku & senryu, your submission can include: up to three (3) haibun, up to three (3) rengay or other short sequences (including alternate forms of rengay and split sequences), and one (1) renku.
Submissions should be sent to: <frogpondeditor@gmail.com> with the subject line: Frogpond Submission - Your Name. Paste all poetry submissions in the body of the email; we will not open poetry attachments without a prior request. If you have a poem that requires special formatting, please email <frogpondeditor@gmail.com> to learn about submission options.
Please make sure to include both your first and last name as you wish it to appear in print, as well as your place of residence (city, state abbreviation) in the body of your email (for our author index). If you live outside the U.S., please also include your country name.
The Frogpond email address is set to send automatic response notifications during our standard submission periods. If you send poetry during this time and do not receive an automatic reply, please send a follow-up to this address to ensure that it’s not an issue with the Frogpond email account. (Please only use this follow-up address if you do not receive an auto-response from the Frogpond account. Do not use it for regular submissions.)
6. Essays & Articles: Essays and articles can be sent at any time to: <frogpondessays@proton.me> with the subject line: Frogpond Submission: Essay or Frogpond Submission: Article. You must also CC <frogpondeditor@gmail.com> with your submission.
Please note that we have updated our essay guidelines, including cutoff dates for each issue. While essays will still be considered year-round, given the volume we receive, we have had to implement more structure to allow us to better select and edit pieces in time for each issue. You can view our updated guidelines, including length suggestions, formatting tips, and cutoff dates here: [essay submission guidelines PDF]
7. Book Reviews: HSA members can send their books to request a book review at any time. HSA members who are editors can also send their anthologies to request a book review at any time.
The following book information should be sent (preferably by email) to: <frogpondeditor@gmail.com> with the subject line: Request for Book Review
A) Book Title
B) Your Name and role (Author or Editor)
C) A brief book description
D) Where readers can buy the book
E) Book Price
Books for review should be mailed to:

We are also now considering ebooks for review. You should submit the same information as for print books, and also have the book available in PDF format, as not everyone has e-reading devices in other formats. Please note that if a book is available in both print and digital formats, we prefer to review print books. However, if you live in an area where shipping a print book to us is cost-prohibitive, you may submit a PDF.
6. Artwork: Submissions of original drawings should be emailed to: <frogpondeditor@gmail.com> with the subject heading: Frogpond Drawing - Your Name
