Hangin' Loose

by Terri L. French

It’s called the primordial pouch. It’s a normal part of a cat’s anatomy, varying in size from cat to cat. My cat’s is rather large and has gotten saggier as she’s gotten older, swaying and jiggling as she walks. It’s there to protect the cat’s internal organs during a fight as they tend to aim their sharp claws at soft belly flesh. The more padding there is, the more likely a cat will escape unscathed, or at least with only minor injuries. Looking at my own “senior-spread” I think, should I ever find myself in a cat fight with a female of my own species, my vitals would remain intact .
